We all want to win at yarn chicken (yay!), but that usually means we have somewhere between a smidge and a fair amount of leftover yarn (boo!). Luckily, holiday decorating is a great way to use up those random bibs and bobs we all have laying around.
YARN BALL ORNAMENTS
Twistedista Dawn came across this idea a few years ago and swears by them as a thoughtful (and easy) gift for a fiber friend or quick ornament to trim any tree. Family friendly and zero skill required! Here's what you need:
- Yarn. Any color. Any weight. The only restriction is the look you want in the end.
- Toothpicks. Fancier ones like these can usually found at an Asian market. Dawn found ones with ends that make them look exactly like little knitting needles, but even simple round toothpicks look great!
- Ribbon. This is actually optional - you can just use more of the same yarn from the ball to make a tie or slip on an ornament hanger.
Essentially, make a tiny yarn ball as if you are winding a new skein. Stop when it reaches the size you are looking for - roughly an inch or two. Slide in two toothpicks and you are practically done. Then add either a ribbon, loop of yarn, or an ornament hook. Done!
