Below are three national organizations Twisted donated to today. Each is working to dismantle systemic racism and stop police brutality. We'll share local, state, and more national groups in the coming days. We're using direct quotes as much as possible in an effort to amplify BIPOC voices.
Black Lives Matter
"#BlackLivesMatter was founded in 2013 in response to the acquittal of Trayvon Martin’s murderer. Black Lives Matter Foundation, Inc is a global organization in the US, UK, and Canada, whose mission is to eradicate white supremacy and build local power to intervene in violence inflicted on Black communities by the state and vigilantes. By combating and countering acts of violence, creating space for Black imagination and innovation, and centering Black joy, we are winning immediate improvements in our lives." Also: "We affirm the lives of Black queer and trans folks, disabled folks, undocumented folks, folks with records, women, and all Black lives along the gender spectrum. Our network centers those who have been marginalized within Black liberation movements."
Campaign Zero
Campaign Zero believes: "We can live in a world where the police don't kill people by limiting police interventions, improving community interactions, and ensuring accountability." Because: "It will take deliberate action by policymakers at every level of government to end police violence", they offer "A comprehensive package of urgent policy solutions - informed by data, research and human rights principles..." These include ending policing of minor offenses, ending racial profiling, and establishing alternative approaches to mental health crises.
Color of Change
Color Of Change is the nation’s largest online racial justice organization. They summarize: "Color of Change leads campaigns that build real power for Black communities. We challenge injustice, hold corporate and political leaders accountable, commission game-changing research on systems of inequality, and advance solutions for racial justice that can transform our world." Color of Change takes a holistic approach: "The forces that shape our lives are interrelated. We cannot end racism in one area without tackling it in all areas. Racist policing is propped up by racist media narratives on crime and justice. Political inequality is reinforced by economic inequality. Unlivable wages and unfair hiring practices make it easier for corporations to continue to exploit Black workers and consumers."
Black Lives Matter. We stand today and every day with our Black friends, neighbors, and family members. We are and always have been committed to taking affirmative steps to support those who are not in the majority.
As an LYS, we focused on creating a safe, anti-racist space via in-person interactions. Now, as an online-only business, our opportunity to share our beliefs and work to create an anti-racist space is also largely online.
