The ins and outs of knitwear construction are my happy place. I’m constantly inspired by how simple knitting is (it’s just a way of pulling one loop of yarn through another) and yet how astonishingly versatile it is as an artform. Knitting can create almost any shape imaginable by keeping a few things in mind: How many stitches do we start out with? How many stitches do we end up with? Where and how do we increase or decrease to get there?

For this shawl design, I wanted to create an arc-shaped garment that would drape gracefully over the shoulders and stay put. So I divided my stitches up into twelve sections and increased gradually, tucking them into lacey eyelet rows every inch or so. My sweetie saw it and said, “Ooh! Dot, dot, dot, dot, dot, dot…” And so Ellipsis was born.
