Lookbook 14: SETTLE INTO THE QUIET HUDSON VALLEY

For centuries, upstate New York has been the refuge of artists, writers, crafters and city-dwellers—the close proximity to one of the world's most enticing cities enhances the quiet, sleepy charm of the Hudson Valley region just a few hours north. Here, meet makers with fascinating backstories and unusual past lives, now exploring their crafts fully amidst cozy, pastoral landscapes. It's no wonder that this area is also home to one of the largest wool festivals each year: the Dutchess County Sheep & Wool Festival in Rhinebeck, NY, regularly welcomes tens of thousands of visitors in a single weekend for a fiber celebration. We took advantage of this year's festival cancellation to visit the area without the crowds and hustle, exploring it in-depth so that future travelers can see the best of what the Hudson Valley has to offer.

By Hand Serial Lookbook #14 includes almost a dozen inspiring projects for you to make at home. Embroider a delftwork-inspired lampshade, try your hand at a new accessory with Rose Pearlman's punch needle clutch, or stitch a simple quilt with vivid, indigo blues designed by Salt + Still. This book also contains a new sewn garment pattern from Andrea Hungerford: the Hudson, an A-Line swing coat that is approachable and stylish for sewists of all levels.

Lookbook #14 includes a collection of new knitting patterns, as well. Sloane Rosenthal has created a scholarly, cabled sweater in heathery dark tones, and cables take new, botanical shapes in an elegant crescent shawl, designed by Katerina Rieckel. A chic, vintage-inspired cable top by Andrea Hungerford adds a bit of casual flair, while Hannah Thiessen's chunky, large-scale scarf is a dramatic statement piece.

By Hand is a series of lookbooks that focus on different fiber and fabric "making communities" around the country.

Each serial will feature photo journals and interviews with both up-and-coming and well-known yarn designers and dyers, local yarn stores, knitwear designers, fabric artists, and other makers who share the same philosophy and aesthetic of hand crafting functional forms to share and connect with others in the community.  Projects, patterns, classes, and opportunities to purchase the artists’ work will also be included, as well as an opportunity to share what is beautiful and unique about each locale.

All the books and magazines we sell are new. Upon receipt, we inspect them for misprints and damage, then sort them into the following categories in an effort to give you as much information as possible and make sure you're satisfied with your purchase! Regardless of the condition, we'll do our best to package your media item securely so it arrives to you in good shape. Shipping can be a tough journey, though, so we cannot guarantee a book will arrive crisp as the day it was printed.

If you have specific requirements for your book's condition leave us a note at checkout. For example, if ANY minor, normal blemishes are unacceptable, tell us that and what to do next. We can email you photos or refund you if no copies we have in stock meet your needs.

  • Normal - If no condition is listed, it's this one! As far as we can see, these are in normal, good condition for a new book. Please note that most of these books have been shipped all over the world, so they could have very minor, purely cosmetic blemishes. They're comparable to a new book or magazine you'd find in a bookstore. Examples: slightly scuffed corner, very small bent corner, or a small nick in the cover.
  • Cosmetic Damage - These have noticeable cosmetic issues but are still completely functional. We will list the damage and upload photos to show the issue if necessary. Examples of minor damage: a smudge on the cover or crushed corner. Examples of moderate damage: cracked spine or torn cover.
