Brooklyn Tweed's Tones is a versatile worsted weight yarn, woolen spun from American Columbia fleeces, with a round and springy 3-ply construction for stitch definition that shines in textured and cabled knits, creating a delightfully plush fabric with a slight fuzzy halo.
Starting with a light and a dark heathered base yarn, BT uses traditional overdye techniques to create pairs of harmonious shades. Choose your favorite color’s Overtone for a light, bright version of the hue, or its Undertone for a deeper, more subdued variation.
Mix and match Overtones and Undertones in colorwork or stripes for painterly harmony in your fabric. Craft vibrant combinations using Overtones and Undertones of different hues, or go for a more subtle approach by pairing an Overtone and Undertone from the same colorway. We can’t wait to see what you create!
Developed, sourced, processed, spun and dyed 100% in the USA
Images may show more than one skein to give a sense of color variation and patterning. Ordering a quantity of 1 means you will receive 1 skein/ball.
Tones is woolen spun, meaning the fibers remain in a lofty jumble that traps air and offers remarkable warmth and lightness. Its three plies are gently twisted to preserve that buoyant quality, so Tones is significantly more delicate than most commercial yarns. Don't pull too hard or it will come apart.
Woolen-spun yarns are also more adaptable in gauge, as they can compress to a dense sport weight or bloom to cohere as a gauzy fabric when worked on large needles.
Tones has a dry, soft hand and a faintly rustic nature; woolen spinning sometimes results in slightly thinner or thicker sections, and you’ll find the occasional fleck of vegetable matter that proves BT's wool is never treated with harsh chemicals.
Below: Blue -> Red sweater below is Size 1. It used 9 colors (in order top to bottom): Vacay Undertone, Vacay Overtone, Zest Undertone, Zest Overtone, Goldfinch Overtone, Persimmon Overtone, Persimmon Undertone, Melba Overtone, Melba Undertone. Each color is worked for 10 round alone, then the next 10 rows alternates 1 round of the first color and 1 round of next color. Note: This used 1 skein of each color (cutting it very very close for the two Zest colors). Larger sizes would need to work fewer rounds per color and incorporate more colors total.
Pink -> Blue sweater is Size 3. It used 13 colors: lychee over & under, melba over & under, persimmon over & under, goldfinch over, zest over & under, vacay over & under, stonewash over & under. It was worked as 7 rounds in each solid section and 6 rounds (3 of each color) in each alternating section.
Please buy enough for your entire project all at once. For orders of multiple skeins, we will select skeins from the same dye lot or, if there is no dye lot, skeins that visually match. If you add multiple skeins of the same yarn to your cart you'll be prompted at checkout to select how to proceed if we have concerns about skeins matching.
While colors shown are accurate to the best of our ability, computer monitors and dye lots both vary so the skeins you receive may differ from what is shown.
