Top Down Sweater Revolution

It’s hard to believe that our upcoming Top Down Set-In Sleeve Workshops with Elizabeth Doherty are just 2 weeks away! In anticipation, I’ve been spending a lot of time with Elizabeth’s ingenious book, Top Down: Reimagining Set-In Sleeve Design. This book is a fabulous resource, and the method is beautifully and clearly laid out. There are many gorgeous books of patterns out there, but I love encountering one that I know will act as a reference and inspiration for many sweaters to come.

To celebrate Elizabeth’s visit to Twisted, I’m casting on a sweater (what better way to celebrate?) from the book! I chose Serif, a minimalist-ish cardigan that uses the subtle contrast of garter with stockinette, and a not-so-subtle contrast of color, for a perfectly wearable piece. I just know I’ll be sporting it around Twisted all Winter!

One very nice thing about Elizabeth’s method, and the patterns in her book, is the way a knitter is invited to personalize the sweaters and encouraged to create their own. After perusing the lovely finished projects on Ravelry, I think I’ll add some length to the body before starting those smart little pockets. In a wild move, I chose a completely uncharacteristic color combination: I’m using Quince & Co. Lark in Rosa Rugosa, and Chickadee in Malbec. I don’t think I’ve ever owned anything pink before, but I’m in love with this lush fuchsia, so warm and bright to pull on in the grey days ahead.

This is the kind of sweater that requires plenty of R&D. Since the sleeve cap will be picked up, row gauge is more important than usual, and I’m paying very scientific attention to my swatches. Luckily, Elizabeth has lots of clear, helpful advice about swatching, measuring, adapting, and more. I can’t wait to learn more from this very talented lady!

Sign up for one of Elizabeth’s Top Down Set-In Sleeve Workshops today! Seats are going fast, and students will want to complete their homework before the workshop, so don’t hesitate. This is a marvelous opportunity to learn a revolutionary technique from one of knitting’s new masters!
